Know your rights

People with disabilities can have meaningful, competitive employment in the community. It can be helpful to know your rights as a person with a disability and what resources may be available to help you be successfully employed. Below you will find information on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which prohibits employment discrimination because of disability and what to do if you feel you have experienced discrimination.

Where to File Complaints

  • The EEOC for employment discrimination claims under the ADA and Rehabilitation Act.
  • Michigan Department of Civil Rights (MDCR) – employment discrimination claims under Michigan Persons with Disabilities Civil Rights Act (PDCRA). MDCR has an agreement with the EEOC to also investigate ADA claims of employment discrimination. A complaint filed with EEOC or MDCR will result in an automatic filing with the other. However, the PDCRA covers small employers not covered by the ADA.
  • US Department of Labor for Wage and Hour violations and FMLA.
  • Disability Rights Michigan’s – Client Assistance Program (CAP) for problems with Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS), Vocational Rehabilitation Program, Bureau of Services for Blind Persons (BSBP), and Michigan Statewide Independent Living Council.
